STE Research Project

This blog post is to explain and breakdown my research project. I will attempt to illustrate what I have learned about RBD physics in Houdini and how to set up a data stream to simulate a basketball going through a hoop.

In the image above you can see that I successfully got the geometry into the scene. I did this by "tabbing" in two geo node on the top level of the scene. I then went into each geo node and replaced the primitive with the hoop and ball geometry via a file node.

Next I went back to the object level of the scene and made the Hoop geometry into a RBD Static Object and created an RBD object solver on the ball. Then I went into the view panel and tabbed in a ground plane.

Once I had this part of the tree set up I then went into the AutoDopNetwork to change some of the setting in the gravity node and the basketball node to simulated the gravity of earth and to give the ball some velocity.

In Conclusion I was not successful getting the ball to actually go through the hoop geometry. I believe that if I had more time to mess with the collision settings to get the ball to interact with geometry properly.
